Rohan, a software engineer in London, wanted to send part of his UK salary to India and earn attractive fixed-deposit returns. Then rental income from his Mumbai apartment arrived—and he wondered which account should receive which payment.

Could he send his savings back to London? Would the interest be taxable? Could an incorrect account classification create a FEMA compliance problem? The answer starts with understanding NRE versus NRO—a decision that affects tax, repatriation and everyday banking.

1. NRE vs NRO accounts: quick primer

NRE (Non-Resident External) account

An NRE account holds eligible overseas funds in Indian rupees. For qualifying non-residents, interest is generally exempt from Indian income tax and balances are freely repatriable. Because it is denominated in INR, the account still carries foreign exchange risk when money is converted back overseas.

NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account

An NRO account is typically used for legitimate Indian income such as rent, pension and dividends. Interest is generally taxable and subject to applicable TDS. Eligible NRO balances can be repatriated by NRIs/PIOs under the USD 1 million per Indian financial year facility, subject to FEMA, tax and documentation rules. Current income has distinct repatriation treatment. [1]

FEMA compliance: On becoming a person resident outside India under FEMA, a regular resident savings account generally must be redesignated as NRO or handled as prescribed by the bank. Do not leave an ordinary resident account unchanged without checking your status. [1]

2. NRE/NRO interest rates and minimum balances: 2026 comparison

The table below reflects a published comparison whose data was stated as at 11 July 2026. These are not verified live October rates. Savings rates may be slab-based, fixed-deposit rates depend on tenure and amount, and NRE/NRO eligibility and minimum tenures differ. Follow each bank link for its latest official schedule. [3]

Rate verification: 8 October 2026. Official 2026 bank rate schedules were used where available; other rows intentionally show no unverified rate. Rates vary by balance slab, tenure and deposit size. The bank’s latest schedule prevails.

3. Best banks for different NRI goals

For higher potential yields: IDFC FIRST Bank and select private banks

IDFC FIRST Bank deserves consideration if savings yield is a priority. However, headline rates can apply to particular slabs; verify the effective return and the minimum balance, which the comparison places from ₹25,000. Digital service can be convenient, but test the overseas support channels before choosing.

For global convenience: HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank

HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank offer broad NRI banking products, deposits and digital services. Their trade-off is that premium tiers may carry higher balance expectations or fees. Ask for written fee schedules and test international phone/email support rather than relying on unverified customer-service ratings.

For branch reach: State Bank of India

SBI is worth considering when family members in India may need physical branch access. Its standard savings rate is comparatively modest and individual branch service can vary. Confirm the exact NRI account's minimum-balance terms, rather than assuming that every SBI product is zero-balance.

Other alternatives

Axis Bank offers multiple account tiers; Federal Bank is worth reviewing for NRI-focused products; and DBS India and HSBC India may suit customers interested in international or premium relationships. Their account fees, service model and relationship-balance thresholds should be compared individually.

4. Checklist: choose wisely and avoid common pitfalls

  • Start with the source of income: foreign salary or savings usually points to NRE; Indian rent, pension and dividends usually point to NRO.
  • Prepare KYC: passport, overseas residency/visa evidence, PAN or permitted alternative, and current address documents as required by the bank.
  • Update KYC when due: RBI periodic updation is risk-based; there is no universal two-year cycle for all NRIs. Notify the bank of relevant changes promptly.
  • Compare the all-in forex rate: ask what INR is credited after exchange-rate markup, transfer fees, intermediary charges and applicable taxes.
  • Check FD rules: NRE deposits have specific minimum-tenure conditions and premature withdrawal terms; NRO interest is generally taxable.
  • Confirm repatriation documents: NRO transfers may require source-of-funds proof, tax compliance and bank review.

5. Hidden costs that reduce your returns

A small exchange-rate spread can matter when transferring a large salary or investment amount. Compare the actual currency conversion rate, sending and receiving charges, intermediary bank deductions, and account non-maintenance fees—not just the advertised FD yield.

Ask every provider for the final receivable amount after all charges and the conditions under which it could change.

6. Fire Forex: currency exchange and eligible outward remittances

Fire Forex Private Limited is an RBI-authorised AD Category-II foreign exchange dealer. It offers foreign currency exchange, travel-related forex services and assistance with eligible outward remittances, subject to its authorised scope, KYC and FEMA requirements.

Foreign currency encashment: If you return to India with leftover GBP, USD, EUR or other supported currency notes, request a live encashment quote and the required document checklist. Eligible customers can also ask about foreign currency for travel.

International remittances: For permitted purposes such as overseas education, eligible family maintenance or medical expenses, Fire Forex can explain quotations, charges, documentation and processing. NRO capital repatriation under the USD 1 million facility generally must be handled by an authorised dealer bank; Fire Forex should not be treated as a substitute for that bank.

Fire Forex does not open NRE/NRO bank accounts. See official services and contact details in sources [15]–[17].

7. Frequently asked questions

Which is the best NRE account in India in 2026?

There is no single winner. Compare IDFC FIRST for potential yields, HDFC and ICICI for broad private banking services, and SBI for its domestic branch network. Confirm the latest rates and fees with each bank.

Can an NRI maintain both NRE and NRO accounts?

Yes. Eligible NRIs commonly use NRE accounts for overseas earnings and NRO accounts for Indian-source receipts, subject to applicable account rules.

Is NRE account interest completely tax-free?

NRE interest is generally exempt from Indian income tax while statutory eligibility conditions are satisfied. Your country of tax residence may tax it.

Can Indian rental income be deposited into an NRE account?

Indian rental income is generally credited to an NRO account. Subsequent transfers may be permitted under FEMA conditions.

Can I send ₹1 crore from an NRO account to the UK?

Possibly, if eligible under the USD 1 million per financial year facility, subject to the authorised dealer bank’s checks, supporting documents and tax compliance.

Which account is better for fixed deposits?

NRE deposits may suit eligible foreign savings because of Indian tax treatment and repatriability; NRO deposits may suit Indian-source funds but interest is generally taxable.

Can Fire Forex open an NRE or NRO account?

No. These accounts are opened with eligible banks. Fire Forex assists with foreign exchange and eligible remittance services within its AD Category-II authorisation.

Can Fire Forex help with outward remittances?

Fire Forex can assist with eligible current-account remittances within its authorisation. NRO capital repatriation under the USD 1 million facility generally needs an authorised dealer bank.

8. Final verdict

Rohan can now keep eligible overseas salary in an NRE account and receive Mumbai rental income in an NRO account. This helps him distinguish tax treatment and understand when a remittance is freely repatriable versus subject to additional conditions.

Choose the account that matches your income source, tax position, desired banking access and balance comfort—not just the highest advertised interest rate. When you need a foreign currency quote or assistance with an eligible outward remittance, Fire Forex can help within its regulatory scope.
